ACROSS THE VALLEY FROM THE HOUSE: APUAN ALPS
PALAGNANA

The first hike we took. Minutes from the house and what a reward at the end of the walk. It doesn't look like much from the outside but they will feed you for 2 hrs with wines and multiple courses of antipasto, pastas, meat and dessert. GO HUNGRY.

GROTTA DEL VENTO

A great extensive set of caves that offers several levels of walks. In addition nearby are caves for the intrepid splunker! There is another weekender restaurant 0.5 km from the parking lot and restaurant at the Grotto. Go to the first one and go HUNGRY>

M.FORATO

Areally nice hike that follows a river and then climbs up to the ridge of the Apuans where you can see the sea. A top level hike that rewards you at the bottom with the same restaurant as in the Grotto listing.

BEHIND THE HOUSE IN THE APPENINE ALPS
SAN PELLEGRINO IN ALPE

Really a nice narrow road drive up to the most enchanting village monastery with a famous restaurant. A must trip!

PASSO D. RADICI

The pass that separartes Tuscany from Emilio Romagna. Great views and guess what, another weekender restaurant.

CASONE DI PROFECCHIA

On the way to the previous sites and has a fine weekender restaurant with good wines and a great spread. We have eaten here 3 times.

OTHER TRIPS
WALKS FROM THE HOUSE

1.You can drive part way and then walk all the way up to the Apennine ridge by following the road past the house. Great views and scenes from mountain life.

2. Walk the area of Gromignana. Takes several hours actually, passes a monastery and the 4-5 sections of our community that are on different hills .

PARCO ORECCHIELLA

Walk with the wolves. Amazing how wild some places still are in Tuscany. We heard the wolves while hiking and saw the mountain goats. Nice nature preserve and several weekender restaurants as well.

SOMMOCOLONIA

Hike uphill from Barga and be amazed by the views and at what is at the top. A memorial to the Afro-American detatchment that died when thay called their artillery on themselves to oust the German troops that commanded the Serchio Valley.
